19 sophisticated single beds for every budget
There are many reasons you may be on the hunt for a single bed. Perhaps you have a narrow bedroom lacking in floor space which cannot fit a double bed frame comfortably. Perhaps you are a parent purchasing for a children’s bed, or maybe you're looking for a smart, small single bed for a spare bedroom.
If you fall into the first camp, you may think that buying a single bed is your only option. But let me remind you of the world of bespoke furniture. One of the brilliant things about going bespoke, at places like Cornish Bed Co. or Ensemblier, is that you can custom make pieces that are exactly the right size. If you want an extra long single or a small double, you can do so quite easily. There is huge variety in the range of single beds on the market, from design to functionality. We’ve curated a selection that brings together these different styles of bed frame, so there is something to suit all bedrooms and budgets.

Best single bed overall & best single bed for storage: Get Laid Beds Japanese Solid Wood Storage Bed Combo, £930 from Next
Available in four different colour finishes, this versatile Japanese-inspired wooden single bed is stylish and minimalist, as well as incredibly practical; it is our pick for the overall best single bed available now. The overhang at the bottom of the bed is a simple design feature but one which makes this bed stand out for its modern look. It also echoes the small bedside shelves that are a handy feature and can be slotted in around the frame. The built-in storage drawers underneath the bed are seamlessly integrated with the bed's design aesthetic, ensuring discreet and incredibly useful storage space, which is why this is also our pick for the best single bed for storage. It's made in the UK from Scandinavian pine, ensuring durability for years to come.

Best affordable single bed: Habitat Jett Single Metal Bed Frame - Orange, £150 from Habitat
Just because a bed frame is sitting at the lower end of the price spectrum, it doesn't mean you have to have a boring bed; Habitat's Jett metal bed frame is a great example of that. At just £150, it is unbelievably good value, without sacrificing on style. It also comes in a teal option, but we love this zesty orange colour way. It can be bought in a package with a single mattress. Although it says on the Habitat website it's designed with children in mind, it is suitable for adult use, and we certainly don't think it looks like a kids-only piece of furniture. The vibrant bed frame has echoes of the red painted bed frame seen in the former home of Alexandra Tolstoy in Chelsea, an image of which sits at the top of this article.

Best traditional style single bed: Sienna Bed, £999 from Feather and Black
Feather and Black have some beautiful beds available on their website, and the Sienna is no exception. It's a very elegant piece that would look best in traditionally-styled interiors. The design is like a stripped back French Rococo bed, with lovely carved detailing and curved edges, but without being overly ornamented or fussy. It has been crafted from solid, sustainable oak with a weathered finish, and it has a sprung, slatted base. The headboard is upholstered in linen on the front and back. The Sienna is also available in a rattan version, which gives it a totally different look.

Best rattan single bed: Arsel Rattan Single Bed, £625 from La Redoute
A rattan bed will work in lots of styles of home. Whether you're a fan of midcentury design, rustic interiors, minimalism or even partial to a bit of kitsch, there's always room for rattan. La Redoute has a range of lovely vintage-style rattan beds for sale, but we especially like the characterful, retro Arsel design. It is made from natural rattan and it's slim, low profile would look very charming in a smaller bedroom.
Product dimensions: H71 x W96 x D218cm
Best divan single bed: Harrison Spinks Premium Divan Base, £989 from Feather and Black
This high-quality divan bed base is very customisable, with twelve different fabrics by Yorkshire brands Moon and Camira, available to choose from, and for the single size, the choice of no drawers or two drawers built in, for an extra cost. We'd opt for the option with drawers, as a divan-style bed lends itself to this secret under-bed storage by the nature of its base design, over a metal or wooden bedstead, for example. A matching headboard is also available to buy separately. The bed is handmade in Leeds, has a seven year guarantee, and is 100% recyclable, which is a huge bonus for when the bed reaches the end of its (hopefully long) life. Another plus is that Feather and Black offer free delivery on all orders.

Are single beds suitable for adults?
People are often concerned about using single beds in schemes because they do have connotations of being for children but, dressed in lovely bedding, they can look wonderful. For inspiration on how our favourite interior designers dress them, have a look at our bedroom ideas gallery.
What is a UK single size bed?
A single bed is usually 90cm x 190cm, or 2.9 feet by 6.2. There is some variation between styles, so double check the measurements before you choose your bed. If you are looking for a single bed for a child, ensure you double check the height of the bed. A bed too high off the floor may be dangerous for them to sleep in.
