Salvesen Graham combine comfort and elegance in a Mayfair apartment
Everybody knows that first impressions count. So when interior designers Nicole Salvesen and Mary Graham, co-founders of design studio Salvesen Graham, were tasked with a total redesign and reconfiguration of a top floor flat in Mayfair, their starting point was to go big on the entrance hall. Previously this was a small, unprepossessing, single-height space, but as Nicole explains, “we wanted to create the sweeping staircase and a grand-feeling entrance hall as an unexpected feature.” The architect James Howard of Tim Flynn Architects designed the new double height space while Nicole and Mary collaborated on the design of the elegant white Emperador marble staircase. Light pours down on to the black and white marble floor from the roof-light above and adds to the wow factor; that ‘wow’ is further enhanced by the approach through a staircase off the main building stairwell, which is covered in a pretty saffron Fromental wallcovering patterned with ornate peonies.
This was a fun project for the design duo, who say their clients, an American couple whose main home is just outside Charlotte, North Carolina, gave them a pretty free rein with the design. The flat is the client’s London pied-à-terre and Mary and Nicole have given it a homely English layered look whilst also reflecting the grandeur of its surroundings. Hyde Park and the streets of Mayfair can be glimpsed from some of the windows and the city’s skyline can be enjoyed from the newly created sunroom at the top of the building and the surrounding roof terrace. “The original terrace covered the whole footprint of the apartment but the new design creates zones for dining and for relaxing in the sunshine,’ says Mary. It is all surrounded with beautiful planting. The clients, who regularly come to London, enjoy relaxing up here when their eight year old daughter has gone to bed.
After the hard finishes of the hall, Mary and Nicole introduced a variety of textured fabrics in the sitting room. The client wasn’t initially confident with the use of bold colours so the pair kept the patterns tonal. “We chose a grasscloth walling to stop the walls from feeling flat in this very long room,” says Nicole. The wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries is an excellent backdrop for all the contemporary British art, which was selected with the help of Rebecca Gordon Art Advisory. “We used a combination of smaller works of art but also larger pieces which, like the entrance hall, helps to give the impression of a really generous space,” says Nicole. Lottie Cole’s oversized painting Writer’s Block hangs by the fireplace and adds gravitas to the interior.
Even though they opened up the space in the living room they were keen to have separate zones. “The desk works to separate the spaces with the sitting room on one side and the kitchen on the other. There also wouldn’t have been enough room to have chairs all the way around the dining table so we designed a bench that could be anchored against the kitchen island for comfortable dining seating,” says Mary.
As the couple lived abroad and this was not their main home there were no antiques to play with. “We always like to use antiques in every interior project as they anchor a room and give it integrity,” says Mary. The mirror from 1st Dibs and the mid 19th century Napoleon III mahogany and leather desk in the sitting room give that evolved interior look that the couple wanted.
One of the challenges for Mary and Nicole was to make the master bedroom feel special. “De Gournay felt like the perfect solution to elevate this small bedroom,” says Nicole. “We also had the challenge of incorporating air conditioning into the room so we designed bookshelves either side of the window to mask both units. This also had the effect of foreshortening what was previously an overly long space.” The use of a bed tester helped achieve that very English style the client was looking for. As the job progressed the client became more adventurous with using layering and patterns, “and now her taste has radically changed,” says Nicole.
Although the en-suite bathroom is also small, Mary, Nicole and the architect managed to design a space with a large shower, generous vanity and decent sized bath. The wall panelling with mirrors, mounted wall lights and marble bath are in keeping with the Mayfair atmosphere.
The clever design of the daughter’s bedroom, with its pink fabric walls and matching tester and blinds, give it a feminine but not overly childish feel, which is intentional as it doubles up as the guest bedroom. “We wanted it to feel tailored and modern,’ says Nicole. The Antoinette Poisson fabric wallpaper in the guest bathroom adds a sense of luxury and the bespoke tiles from Marlborough Tiles in the shower speak to the design of the zig zag in the fabric walling.
A tiny spare room has been created on the top floor off the sunroom. “The challenge here was always the amount of space we had: it's only big enough for a single bed but has to act as an overflow should the family host guests,” says Mary. Here they have used their own Salvesen Graham zig zag stripe fabric and repeated it on every surface of the room. “Though a bold choice it feels very calming in the room," Mary continues. "We then designed a bespoke rug with the team at Jennifer Manners with a zig zag pattern and fitted it wall to wall, adding to the feeling that you want to close the door and hide away in this jewel box of a space.”
Although the apartment is only around 1600 sq ft the duo have created lots of little nooks and places to relax. Every little detail has been thought through. “They just want to be able to relax here and walk in and feel comfortable,” says Nicole. “This is the place where they want to go out and enjoy London and the local bars and restaurants.” When asked what feature she liked most, the owner replied, “everything!”
