Christmas doorscaping: our favourite design ideas for festive doors
Each year, Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier and get bigger and bigger. There are bigger trees, gaudier baubles and more things for us to consider. What's making waves this year? Christmas doorscaping, the act of decorating your door in a manner more typical of America, with reams of foliage, bows, lights and anything else you fancy. It can be an exterior door (where more is certainly more) or an interior door, to add extra to a scheme. This is more than simply a wreath, this is bigger, better and much more high impact – and this is how the houses of House & Garden have done it.
Paul MASSEY1/12Why use one wreath when you could use six, as the owners of this Regency house designed by Henriette von Stockhausen have done? If you have a sizeable front door, a chain of wreaths connected by a wide ribbon is a rather spectacular way to create a generous entrance.

Owen Gale3/12Amanda Brooks' doorscaping is a wonderful festive addition to her Cotswold house as she decorates it for Christmas. A bough of fir and leaves has been elegantly draped around the front door, intertwined with colourful fairy lights, which echo the decoration elsewhere in her house.
Owen Gale4/12Meanwhile at her guest cottage, Amanda Brooks has taken a more minimalist approach, festooning the rustic front door with swags of greenery, this time studded with classic warm fairy lights.
Paul Massey5/12At Christmas, garden designer Alexander Hoyle decorates the front door of Francis Sultana's Albany flat with mistletoe and Cornus flaviramea twigs.
6/12Annabel Lewis, owner of VV Rouleaux, goes all out at Christmas in her restored Cumbria farmhouse. She covers the lintel above the door in foliage and suspends pinecones from it. A similar look adorns the stone bannisters with baskets of wood and decorations on either side. It's a lovely, festive, natural look.
Lisa Flood7/12For Christmas, Lisa Flood has embraced a decorative scheme of pine branches throughout her Wyoming log cabin. It starts in the entrance, where she's adorned the entire door with a cascade of pine.
Tom Griffiths8/12Interior doors also deserve consideration when it comes to Christmas decorating, and there is room for more than just a sprig of mistletoe. Sean Anthony Pritchard does not hold back when it comes to Christmas decorating at his Somerset cottage, adding foliage everywhere he can. Here, he's put it above the library door, where it drapes down appealingly.
Tom Griffiths9/12The dining room doorway at Sean Pritchard's house is screened by a curtain, whose pole Sean is decorated with simple crepe paper ribbons. It's another sweet, simple way to up the ante.
Christopher Horwood10/12While outdoors may be the obvious place for wreaths bursting with foliage, we love the idea of decorating your interior doors with more delicate wreaths. In this shoppable scheme of Christmas decorations, our decoration team used metallic garlands from Bungalow to add a little glimmer to the doors.
11/12For a subtle door dressing, try this simple gold garland, which our decoration team draped around a doorway for this charming Christmas decoration scheme. It's elegant, glittery and adds another simple dimension to a room.
Paul Raeside12/12A fuller look could be created with a swag, as seen above the door (left) in the same scheme. It's still a fairly small statement but it adds to the overall look of the room, without detracting from the main decoration.
